Ductless Mini Split

Ductless mini split in a nutshell

Mini split units, also referred to as "ductless mini split" and "ductless heat pump," function just as heat pumps do, but with little or no duct work. They allow you to control temperatures in individual rooms or spaces in existing homes and new construction alike.

Mini split units fill the gap between basic window A/C units and traditional heat pumps. They are easy to install -- usually requiring only power and communication cables, copper tubing, and a condensation drain line connecting the outdoor and indoor units. They are smaller and less costly than traditional heat pumps and are more efficient and longer lasting than basic window units.

Mini split units can serve as retrofit add-ons to houses with existing “non-ducted” heating systems, such as hydronic (hot water heat), radiant panels, and space heaters (wood, kerosene, propane). They can also be a good choice for room additions where extending or installing distribution ductwork is less practical.

Mini splits consist of two parts: 1) an outdoor compressor; and 2) an indoor air handler or evaporator.

Benefits of Ductless Mini Split

  • Mini-split systems have little to no ducts so they avoid energy losses associated with the ductwork of central forced air systems which can account for more than 30% of energy consumption for heating and cooling, especially if the ducts are in an unconditioned space like an attic or basement.

  • The smaller footprint of mini split units increases their flexibility for heating and cooling individual rooms.

  • Some mini split models offer "Multizone" features that consist of several indoor fixtures feeding into a single outdoor unit. Each indoor fixture can be used independent of other connected units so different rooms can be set to different temperatures at any time, unlike central systems that cool or heat all rooms at the same time.

  • Mini split units automatically turn on and off to maintain the set temperature, which avoids unnecessary expenses.

  • Mini split units are very quiet which limits disturbances during activities and sleeping hours.

  • Mini split units do not generate polluting gases from combustion, such as carbon monoxide, so their use in enclosed spaces is completely safe.

Pro tip!

Try not to mess with the thermostat too much! Mini split units are the most efficient when maintaining a consistent temperature.
